Are There Waters Above the Sky? Genesis 7:11 says that in the time of the flood, “… the floodgates of the heavens were opened.”
Genesis 7:11 is easily explained in that the “heavens” there refer to the “first heaven,” the atmosphere including clouds and weather patterns from which we receive our rains.
2 Corinthians 12:2 speaks of the “third heaven.” This implies that there are three heavens, and these appear to be:
- The first heaven – the atmosphere of the earth, including the air immediately above our heads;
- Beyond that, the second heaven – outer space;
- Beyond that, the third heaven – where God abides.
Psalm 148:4 refers to the “waters” above the skies. Psalm 104:2-3 says that God “stretches out the heavens like a tent and lays the beams of His upper chambers on their waters.”
I cannot explain this, other than to say that perhaps there are indeed waters above the sky, perhaps even in the third heaven. Certainly, science has not disproved this.
